Update from the Chairman – Appointment of Group Chief Executive Officer

Appointment of Marcus Martin

On behalf of the Board of Governors, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Marcus Martin as the new Group Chief Executive Officer of the College of Law, effective no later than 1 July 2025.

A Global Search for the Right Leader

This appointment follows a rigorous global search that attracted a strong field of candidates with deep expertise across legal education and leadership. Marcus stood out for his experience, clarity of vision, and strong alignment with the College’s mission and future direction.

Relevant Experience and Strategic Focus

In Marcus’s role as Chief Executive Officer of the College of Law New Zealand, he has led significant strategic development and growth. His earlier work with the Auckland District Law Society further shaped his understanding of the evolving needs of the profession and the role of legal education in preparing practitioners for success. This background positions Marcus well to lead the College into its next chapter - locally and internationally.

Looking Ahead

We are excited to welcome Marcus into the Group CEO role and look forward to working closely with him to continue building the College’s impact and relevance. He will play a key role in deepening our engagement with the profession, strengthening support for our students and alumni, and further innovating how we deliver practical legal education.

In accepting the new appointment, Marcus has said:

"I am honoured to be taking on this new role with the College of Law at such a pivotal time. The College has a rich history of excellence in legal education, and I look forward to working with the talented teams across the Group to build on this legacy and drive innovation in how we support students and the legal profession.”

Acknowledging the Legacy of Neville Carter AM

I would also like to take this opportunity to recognise and thank Neville Carter for his outstanding leadership over the past 30 years. Under Neville’s guidance, the College has grown into an internationally recognised institution. His contribution to legal education in Australia and abroad has been extraordinary and the Board extends its deepest gratitude.

Leading the College into its Next Phase

The Board is confident that, under Marcus Martin’s leadership, the College will continue to evolve and thrive in an ever-changing legal landscape. We look forward to this next chapter - one of strong partnerships, continued innovation and renewed commitment to the profession we serve.
