After building a successful career across top tier professional services firms and as a criminal prosecutor, Oliver Morrisey had achieved what many would consider professional success. But beneath the surface, he felt something was missing.
That search for clarity led him to postgraduate study, where his commitment to mastering his field was recognised with the award for Best Graduating Student in Wills and Estates.
Searching for fulfilment in a successful career
Despite having spent the first seven years of his career at KPMG and Deloitte before moving into criminal prosecution and later general practice, Oliver reflects that he often felt unfulfilled in his career.
Over time, that sense of dissatisfaction became harder to ignore. During COVID, despite having job security, the gap between where he was and where he wanted to be became increasingly clear.
He recalls a defining shift during this period. “In 2020, I had my first child and in my ‘spare’ time I immersed myself in self-development, and as part of my readings came across a book called Mastery by Robert Greene.”
That book reshaped his perspective on his career. Rather than continuing to work across a broad range of matters, Oliver began to consider what it would mean to build true depth in a single area of law.
Looking back, he describes it simply. “Truth be told, it was an epiphany which motivated me to pursue postgraduate study in Wills and Estates.”
The turning point
Postgraduate study became the pathway for Oliver to turn that realisation into action. It provided the structure, focus and depth needed to transition from general practice to specialist expertise.
Reflecting on this shift, he explains, “Ultimately, I have fully redesigned my career by establishing myself as an expert in the field of wills and estates.”
With a clear direction, the results followed. Oliver built a strong reputation in the market and expanded his practice across Sydney, positioning himself as a leader in the field.
He shares, “Since the epiphany, through a combination of passion, focus and hard work, I have gained a reputation as market leader and my business is now the leading dedicated Wills and Estate practice in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, with two additional offices now open across Sydney.”
Applying postgraduate learning in real time
A defining strength of the Master of Laws program was how directly it applied to Oliver’s day to day work. The course content aligned closely with the client matters he was handling, allowing him to immediately translate theory into practice.
Describing this experience, he says, “On any given day, I receive dozens of client queries,” he recalls, “and then at night, I would attend the course seminars, and on every occasion, without fail, I would learn something that was directly relevant to that day’s inquiries.”
This constant reinforcement accelerated his capability, creating a feedback loop between study and practice that deepened his expertise.
He notes that the impact of this learning has been lasting. “Even now, I still keep a folder containing a printed copy of all Module Notes within reach, for quick reference.”
From capability to confidence and growth
Since completing the program, Oliver has seen a clear shift in both his confidence and his ability to deliver outcomes for clients. That growth has translated directly into the expansion of his business.
“My improved capability has led to better client outcomes,” he reflects, “I have seen a direct correlation between my knowledge and growth of the business.”
Where he once felt constrained by the limits of general practice, he now approaches each matter with confidence and clarity, offering well-structured advice from the outset.
“I now rarely receive an enquiry which I cannot address. I can now advise on options and map out the range of potential outcomes from the initial consultation,” he explains.
This increased capability has also driven efficiency, allowing him to better balance professional success with personal priorities.
“Greater efficiency has allowed me to make the most of my ‘working hours’ and free up as much time as I can to spend with my wife and three children.”
Redefining success through expertise and flexibility
Postgraduate study has also reshaped how Oliver defines success in his career. While previous study had intellectual value, it did not translate into meaningful impact in practice.
Reflecting on that experience, he says, “I can honestly say that my first Master of Laws which I completed in 2016, despite being from one of Sydney’s leading Universities, did not contribute to the ‘success’ of my ‘profession’ whatsoever.”
His experience in wills and estates was fundamentally different, delivering immediate and measurable outcomes.
“In stark contrast, the College of Law’s Wills and Estates (Applied Law) program has directly, and often immediately, advanced my success in my profession,” he explains, “all the while gaining the flexibility to spend more time with my family.”
Success, for Oliver, is now defined by expertise, impact and balance. It is about delivering strong client outcomes while building a sustainable and fulfilling career.
“That’s what professional success looks like to me.”
A clear message for future postgraduate students
For lawyers considering postgraduate study, Oliver’s advice is grounded in experience. Building deep expertise early can have a lasting and compounding impact on a legal career.
“The sooner you become a master in your field, the sooner you will see compounding professional success.”
Looking ahead with purpose
“I believe goals are essential to both personal and professional improvement. I set and regularly review personal, professional and financial goals,” Oliver shares.
Looking ahead, his focus is sharp and intentional. He is working towards:
- Expanding his practice to become Sydney’s leading wills and estates firm, with a strong focus on client satisfaction
- Building a high performing team, remaining the only law practice in Australia to exclusively recruit lawyers who have completed or are undertaking the College of Law’s Wills and Estates program
- Completing specialist accreditations in both wills and estates and elder law to further strengthen his expertise
- Maintaining his health and wellbeing, ensuring he can continue to perform at his best for his clients and his family over the long term
Together, these goals show how postgraduate study has shaped Oliver’s career beyond qualification, providing a foundation for long-term success in wills and estates law.
