The College of Law and the Centre for Legal Innovation (CLI) have launched their NewLaw Careers virtual internship with Forage.
The NewLaw Careers internship features five NewLaw careers – Legal Operations Professional, Legal Data Analyst, Legal Technologist, Legal Knowledge Manager, and Family Law Mediator. The internship program was developed in collaboration with leading subject area experts in their fields to ensure interns could sample real-world experiences within the five NewLaw careers specified.
“We believe this is a world first – the first virtual internship in NewLaw careers. The program recognises the increased interest in, and the growing number of NewLaw roles emerging/expanding in law firms, legal departments, and law companies globally,” Terri Mottershead, Executive Director, CLI, says.
Interns will be able to undertake a task in one or more of the careers listed and in return receive a model answer and a certificate for each completed task. The tasks have been designed to deliver practical insights into what NewLaw professionals do day-to-day, as well as provide career options for law students, law graduates and lawyers looking to change careers, and professionals from other industries looking to work in the legal sphere.
Interns will learn from an impressive list of subject matter experts who contributed to the program, including:
- Carolyn Austin, Director, Knowledge and Practice Support, Australia, K&L Gates
- Sam Burrett, Legal Optimisation Consulting, Minter Ellison
- Denise Doyle, Head of Legal Operations, modCounsel

The driving force behind the College of Law, CLI and Forage collaboration into the NewLaw careers space, was the overwhelming interest the College received from its global virtual NewLaw Careers Summit and series in 2022. This was followed by further interest in the Legal Ops clinic in 2022/23. The growth in NewLaw demand also led to the launch of virtual meet ups in legal design and Legaltech in Q1 2023.
“The role of the CLI is to identify change in the profession and then connect people with those emerging careers if that is of interest to them,” Terri explains. “The collaboration with our friends at Forage to create a world-leading virtual internship program is an extension of this approach - to provide a multiplicity of options, particularly in new and emerging areas of law.”
According to Angie Zandstra, Chief Commercial Officer for the College of Law, the College is an education provider from the profession, for the profession, and so being at the forefront of change is essential.
“We want to allow law students and practitioners to expand their career horizons in whatever way and direction they choose throughout their career – particularly in these NewLaw paths that are growing across the profession.”
The College offers a breadth of courses that resource and support legal professionals who want to expand their career journeys. This includes the LLM program, through to mediation, arbitration, collaborative practice and newer offerings such as the Master of Legal Business.
“We are seeing new roles in the legal profession that we have never seen before; this is creating opportunities for practitioners inside and outside the law in both legal and allied professional roles,” Lewis Patrick, Chief Academic Officer at the College of Law, says.
“At the College it is all about your choice. You choose the support you need, when you need it, rather than prescribing a one-size-fits pathway for people.”
