What did you want to be growing up? A lawyer? An astronaut? A nurse?
For Lauren Battersby, a recent College of Law LLM graduate, her dream job was a little less common.
It was goat farming.
But life has a funny habit of leading you where you need to be. For Lauren, that was accepting a position at a specialist family law firm and, later, graduating at the top of her Masters.
So, how did she get here?
We spoke with Lauren about her journey to legal specialisation. And how the College of Law was instrumental in getting her there.
A fortunate twist of fate
Lauren wasn’t groomed for the courtrooms – her dreams were quite literally of the field.
‘Growing up, I didn’t know any lawyers. It seemed like a remote, inaccessible career. So it was hard to imagine myself doing something completely foreign to me.’
But fate had other plans for her.
‘I was studying for my Bachelor of Arts – a last-minute change from a Bachelor of Agricultural Science – when I enrolled in a random law-related subject. I don’t know why I did it!’ Lauren laughs. ‘But the course instantly sparked something in me. I finished that degree and went back to do a Juris Doctor.’
Through that degree and subsequent work in a family law firm, she discovered a new passion: working with clients on legal matters that directly affect their lives.
‘Before graduating, I didn’t know what area of law I wanted to work in. But then, I was fortunate enough to be mentored by a fantastic managing partner of a specialist family law firm. I did some work experience with their firm, which introduced me to the practical aspects of family law. I just fell in love with the area.’
A hop, skip, and a jump later, Lauren was admitted to practice – and landed her first legal role at the same firm in 2019.
Managing diversity in family law
Lauren quickly realised just how diverse family law is. From complex parenting issues to corporations, trusts, tax and international disputes, family lawyers need broad – and deep – legal knowledge.
So she decided to return to the education system. This time, for a Master's degree.
‘I wanted a course that I could study alongside my professional practice. Something that would add practical, focused value to my career. So, I chose the College’s Master of Applied Law (Family Law).
‘It was the only program that offered exactly what I was after!’
So, with a full-time legal role on the go – how did Lauren manage to find time to study? But more than that, how did she graduate at the top of her class?
‘I did my Master’s one subject at a time. Thankfully, it was delivered online – and I had incredibly supportive employers who gave me some flexibility, especially around assessment time. Juggling both was challenging at times, but achievable.’
Despite the intensity, Lauren says she has no regrets about studying so early in her specialisation journey.
‘To any lawyer considering a Master’s, I’d say do it within one to three years following your admission. It accelerated my learning and gave me a solid foundation for practice.’
Mastering her craft – in real-time
With all this on the go, it would be easy to feel overwhelmed. Or to burn out.
But for Lauren, studying was energising.
‘At the College, I was surrounded by knowledgeable, passionate lecturers and enthusiastic classmates. It was such a stimulating learning environment – discussing legal issues in real depth.’
And outside of the (virtual) classroom? Lauren was able to apply her growing knowledge directly to her practice.
‘I was developing the essential technical skills for being a family lawyer and deepening my understanding of the practice area. I would learn a practical strategy in class and apply it the very next day at work.
‘We dug deeply into the body of case law, which informs my client advice today. Plus, I was better able to engage in conversations about matters with senior lawyers at work. Which I loved.’
Finding support in the right places
Lauren’s achievements are impressive.
From being awarded Top Graduating Student at the College and working as an Associate at one of Melbourne’s leading Family Law firms (as credited by Doyle’s Guide 2023) – life has certainly taken her in a very different direction from what she imagined.
But Lauren’s not one to take credit.
‘I have been so fortunate to have such wonderful mentors, lecturers and classmates along the way – many of whom I keep in touch with. And I’m working with a supportive, incredibly talented team in a rich learning environment today. It’s been amazing!’
So, what’s next for Lauren?
‘I’ll be taking things one step at a time,’ she laughs. After so many turbocharged years – we’re sure she deserves it!
