KAY SMITH SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship commemorates Kay Smith's 33 years of sustained outstanding contribution to The College of Law. In honour of Kay's dedication, this scholarship has been introduced by the Board of Governors to support the education aspirations of outstanding law graduates and young lawyers.

Courses Available

Master of Laws (LLM) and Practical Legal Training (PLT)

Value

100% of either the Master of Laws (LLM) or Practical Legal Training (PLT) course fee.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • be an Australian or New Zealand law graduate or newly admitted lawyer (within the last three years) who obtained their legal qualification from an Australian or New Zealand institution while working and studying.
  • Demonstrate that your educational opportunities have been limited due to financial difficulty or other adverse personal circumstances, and that receiving this scholarship would help you overcome these limitations.

  • Not already hold any other bursary or scholarship, and not be a past recipient of this scholarship. 

The scholarship will be awarded to an applicant who best demonstrates:

  • Commitment to academic achievement.

  • Adverse circumstances, such as having exhausted your Fee-HELP allowance, being rejected for a personal loan, or lack of financial support from family.

  • Contribution to or a positive impact on your family and/or community.

  • Personal qualities and motivation, including:
    • Your legal career aspirations and how you hope to use your legal training.
    • A commitment to career advancement through education.
    • An understanding of how a dynamic legal career can benefit both you and the community.

  • Leadership qualities, such as:
    • A demonstrated ability to deliver results.
    • Strength of purpose in pursuing your goals.
    • Creativity and innovation.
    • Self-awareness of your role in activities and the impact on others.
    • A strong desire to contribute to society.

  • Personal circumstances or background that warrant special consideration by the Board of Governors.

To apply for the scholarship, you must:

  • Complete the Application Form.

  • Attach the following supporting documents:
    • Evidence of Australian or New Zealand citizenship.
    • A statement addressing each of the selection criteria.
    • A copy of your academic transcript/record.
    • A brief curriculum vitae (CV).
    • Names and contact details (address, email, telephone) of two referees.

  • Submit your application by email to enrolments@collaw.edu.au.

  • Short-listed applicants may be required to attend an informal interview with some members of the Board of Governors.

If you receive the scholarship, you are required to:

  • Submit an end-of-financial-year report to the College, outlining your progress and achievements. The College will notify you of the report submission due date.

  • Participate in any publications, media, and events related to the award of the scholarship.

  • If awarded the scholarship to complete a College LLM (Applied Law), you must achieve a passing grade in each subject. If you fail any subject, the Board may, at its discretion, deny you further funding under the scholarship.

Scholarship applications for the next year close on 15th December. It takes about 3 to 6 months to process successful applications.  

VALE KAY SMITH

Kay’s legal career began when she gained her qualification in Law through the NSW Legal Practitioners Admission Board. Kay then obtained a position as an articled clerk with a city firm at a time when there were very few openings for women in the legal profession. She was admitted as a solicitor and established a legal career. She moved from private practice to the College of Law in 1983 – the start of a 30 year career at the College.

Highlights of Kay’s outstanding career at the College include, helping establish a practical legal training program in New Zealand, working with the City University Hong Kong, serving for many years as Director of the College’s flagship pre-admission program, chairing the Course Committee, attending the Academic Board, serving as interim leader of The College of Law Victoria and serving  as President of the Australasian Professional Legal Education Council (APLEC).

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE BURSARY

This bursary helps students facing significant financial hardship by easing their education costs.

Practical Legal Training (PLT)

Three per year

Value

50% of the Practical Legal Training course fee.

To be eligible for this bursary, you must:

  • Demonstrate extreme financial hardship, beyond the hardship often experienced by PLT students, such as having reached the limit of your FEE-HELP cap.

If you are eligible for FEE-HELP or have access to any savings,  it will be difficult to satisfy this criteria

You are required to provide information, with supporting evidence where applicable, on:

  • Proof and documentation of your Australian citizen or permanent resident status.
  • Your income, assets, and liabilities.
  • The availability of financial assistance from family or other sources.
  • Any obligations you may have to support or care for others.
  • Any other circumstances of hardship, such as domestic circumstances or health issues.

Evidence supporting a claim of extreme financial hardship might include:

  • Bank statements.
  • Details of assets and liabilities.
  • Rejection of an application for a personal loan.
  • Confirmation of exhaustion of FEE-HELP loan limit.
  • Details of family circumstances.
  • Details of employment status and history.

All supporting documents must have your full name as proof of identity.

ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER BURSARY

This bursary provides financial support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

To be eligible for this bursary, you must:

  • Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
  • Identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.
  • Provide satisfactory evidence that you are accepted as such by the community in which you live, or formerly lived.

You are required to provide information, with supporting evidence where applicable, on:

  • Proof and documentation of your Australian citizen or permanent resident status.
  • A letter from a local Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation or a relevant land council.
  • A document from a government department or agency confirming or accepting your Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status.

All supporting documents must have your full name as proof of identity.
